Fifty years into his career, Lee Fields still writes like every line matters — ‘when I record, I make every song like I actually mean it,’ he’s said, and this is the first Expressions album where he and the band co-wrote every track together rather than working from outside material. Cut in three weeks at Diamond Mine Studios in Queens with producers Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, recorded and mixed entirely to tape, the ten songs move through relationship trouble, family and environmental concern without ever tipping into pastiche. ‘Never Be Another You’ plays it minimal and aching; ‘Make This World’ returns to straight funk with an ecological edge.
