Holy Hive’s self-titled second album came together in three separate stretches — sessions in California before the pandemic, months of remote back-and-forth once it hit, then a final creative burst after drummer Homer Steinweiss and vocalist Paul Spring reunited in New York. Steinweiss, who’s played drums for Adele and Bruno Mars on the side, calls their sound ‘Folk Soul,’ sparse and warm rather than showy — a step up from a debut he describes as fun but sometimes surface-level, this one aiming to write more directly about life. Fifteen tracks that trade easy romanticism for something plainer and more personal.
