Kelly Finnigan's 2019 solo debut on Colemine, written, produced and largely self-performed across a two-year stretch, pulls together soul, R&B and hip-hop influences absorbed over a lifetime spent immersed in the genre. Drummer James Gadson (Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye) and members of Monophonics fill out the band, while Finnigan's own father, Mike Finnigan, a keyboardist who worked with Jimi Hendrix and Etta James, appears on the record too, a direct line between two generations of the same session-musician tradition. Ten original songs, raw and gritty in places, lushly arranged in others.
