Kokoroko, the London Afrobeat-jazz collective's self-titled debut EP, was released March 2019 on Brownswood Recordings. Led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, the eight-piece formed in 2014 and built a following through sets at Ronnie Scott's, the Afropunk Festival, and tours across Brazil, Colombia and Europe. Track "Abusey Junction" had already appeared on Brownswood's We Out Here compilation, named Rough Trade's Compilation of the Year in 2018, and drew early praise from The Wire, Monocle and The New York Times. "Adwa" references the 1896 Battle of Adwa, Ethiopia's victory over Italy, while "Uman" is a tribute to Black women.
