Recorded during Jamaica's early-to-mid 1970s dub explosion and credited to King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock), this fourteen-track set treats vocal mixes from artists including John Holt, Johnny Clarke and Horace Andy, sourced from Studio One and Treasure Isle, as raw material for remixing rather than finished songs. Bassists Aston “Family Man” Barrett, Fully Fullwood and Robbie Shakespeare anchor the “flying cymbal” rhythms typical of 1973-74 reggae, while Tubby applies phasing, high-pass filtering, echo and reverb to isolate and recombine the channels. He was, by his own studio's account, remixing at a level nobody else in the genre had attempted, work that made him a reference point for recording engineers well outside reggae.
