Tommy McCook was one of the founding voices of Jamaican horn playing — a member of the original Skatalites and the Supersonics before this session, credited with helping shape ska, rocksteady and reggae's early sound. Here producer Bunny Lee pairs McCook's horn lines with the Aggrovators' backing band, while King Tubby, working the desk, pulls the rhythms apart into dub — deep sub-bass, tightly cut drums, reverb trailing off into space. Twelve tracks that move between instrumental reggae and outright dub reconstruction, the horn-and-desk combination giving the record two distinct identities depending on which side you're listening for — McCook's melodic voice, or Tubby's studio hand reshaping it.
