The Federal Years... Part Two, a 1984 compilation on Solid Smoke Records, gathers recordings James Brown and the Famous Flames made for Federal Records, the King Records subsidiary that signed the group in February 1956 after A&R man Ralph Bass won a bidding war for them. The label had nearly dropped the group by 1958 before "Try Me" became their first number-one R&B hit in 1959, a turning point the label years led up to.
