Recorded over two sessions in March 1968, this is Hancock working without a lead horn — Thad Jones on flugelhorn, Jerry Dodgion on alto flute and Peter Phillips on bass trombone instead, voiced for color rather than solos. Hancock said he was chasing sounds over chord changes, closer to arrangers like Gil Evans than standard hard bop. He later credited the record with pointing him toward the sextet he'd lead next.
