Recorded August 1960 at Van Gelder Studio, this edition of the Messengers leaned on its younger members for material — Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons and Lee Morgan all contributed original compositions rather than Blakey writing the book himself. Liner note writer Barbara J. Gardner framed it as Blakey deliberately showcasing new talent through collaborative arrangement, extended solo space built into every track. Five compositions across two sides, the Gillespie standard giving the record its title without dominating it.
