Gentleman, from 1973, is often pointed to as Fela Kuti's high-water mark, a record where the political bite and the tunes land with equal force. The title track rejects Western dress and manners outright ("I no be gentleman at all"), Fela staking his claim as an African original on his own terms. "Fefe Na Efe" pulls from an Ashanti proverb about feminine grace, a tribute to a Ghana he loved and had personal ties to. Closer "Igbe" turns to blunt, scatological language to call out betrayal among friends, Fela unbothered as ever by what subjects were considered off-limits. Across all three, the arrangements do as much talking as the lyrics.
