Expensive Shit, from 1975, grew directly out of a 1974 police raid on Fela Kuti's Kalakuta Republic compound, during which officers planted a joint on him. Fela swallowed it to destroy the evidence and was jailed until a clean sample could be produced, forcing his eventual release. The title track recounts the whole ordeal, including the lengths police went to in pursuit of that sample. "Water No Get Enemy," built on a Yoruba proverb about the unstoppable force of nature, carries a different message entirely: that working with rather than against the world's currents makes people, and especially Africans, harder to break.
