Recorded in a single day, June 17, 1964, at Van Gelder Studio — Hancock on piano, Freddie Hubbard on cornet rather than his usual trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, Tony Williams on drums. All four originals were Hancock's own, written over the preceding two years, including “Cantaloupe Island,” which went on to become a standard well beyond this record. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it the record that established Hancock as a major artist in his own right.
