The Poet, released November 1981 on the independent Beverly Glen Music, is Bobby Womack's thirteenth studio album, self-produced with Otis Smith as executive producer. Recorded at Hit City West and Kendun Studios with a backing cast including Nathan East, James Gadson and harpist Dorothy Ashby, it became the best-selling record of Womack's career, topping the Black/R&B albums chart on the strength of "If You Think You're Lonely Now."
