Heavy Weather, released 1977 on Columbia, was orchestrated by Joe Zawinul with Jaco Pastorius as co-producer and Wayne Shorter assisting, recorded at Devonshire Sound Studios in North Hollywood. "Birdland," built from a melody Zawinul had first sketched on an earlier composition, became an unusually large hit for an instrumental and has since become a jazz standard in its own right. The album reached number one on the Jazz Albums chart and was eventually certified six-times platinum.
