What Kinda Music, released April 2020 on Blue Note, grew out of jam sessions between Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes after the two met at the launch party for Misch's Geography. Much of the record was fully improvised, including "Kyiv," recorded on the spot during a music video shoot in the Ukrainian capital. The record sets Misch's polished neo-soul melodies against Dayes's loose, exploratory drumming, moving through acid jazz, psychedelia and hip-hop without settling on any single one.
