Puttin' It Together, recorded and released in 1968 on Blue Note, marked Elvin Jones's debut as a leader for the label, fronting a trio with Joe Farrell on tenor and soprano saxophone, flute and piccolo, and Jimmy Garrison on bass. AllMusic has singled out Farrell's playing here as some of his finest work of the period. The eight tracks mix jazz standards with originals by Garrison, Farrell and Jimmy Heath, the pianoless format giving all three players room to stretch.
