Recorded across two sessions in April and June 1964 with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, all five compositions here are Coltrane originals, released on Impulse! that July. Coltrane sits out entirely on side two of the original LP, leaving space for Garrison's bass and Jones's drums to carry the record instead of dominating with his own horn. Garrison's widow later said this album, alongside A Love Supreme, was the one he listened to most.
