Recorded through 1972-73 with producers Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff running their T.O.N.T.O. synthesizer rig, Innervisions is where Wonder played nearly every instrument himself across seven of the nine tracks and turned fully toward songs about drugs, racism and inequality rather than romance. “Living for the City” is the record's centerpiece, opening with street noise before its account of systemic racism unfolds. It won Album of the Year at the following year's Grammys.
