Chip Wickham recorded this 2018 album in Madrid the previous summer, his second solo record and a step further into Arabic-inflected spiritual jazz than his debut La Sombra. The title refers to a seasonal Gulf wind, and the six tracks move between modal meditation (“Snake Eyes”), high-energy sax runs (“Barrio 71”) and outright funk (“Soho Strut”), with Matthew Halsall guesting on “The Mirage.” Wickham draws on three decades of session and collaborative work — Nightmares On Wax, The Pharcyde, Roy Ayers among the credits — condensed here into a record indebted more to Yusef Lateef than to anyone from his hip-hop past.
