After a stretch as a three-piece, Portico Quartet reunited as a full band for this fourth album, recorded at Fish Factory Studios in London and built around a specific question: how do acoustic instruments — hang drum, saxophone, strings — interact with modern production rather than get replaced by it? ‘We wanted to use acoustic instruments but find ways in which they could interact with more modern production techniques,’ the band explained, and the record’s dense, layered textures follow through on that, staying organic even as electronics thread through. The artwork, made by drummer Duncan Bellamy scanning moving tablet images, gives the automation theme a literal source.
