Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata, originally released in 1976 on Ghana's Gapophone label and reissued by Mr Bongo in 2018 with replica artwork, caps a run that carried Thomas through the Broadway Dance Band, the Uhuru Dance Band and Ebo Taylor's Blue Monks before he formed Sweet Beans and then Marijata. Backing him here are Kofi "Electric" Addison on drums, Bob Fischlan on organ and Nat Osmanu on guitar, fusing highlife with reggae, folk, funk and soul. Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, a longtime admirer, has put it simply: "I'm an afrobeat drummer but Pat Thomas is highlife," a distinction Allen clearly respected.
