This self-titled 1977 album was Ebo Taylor's first as a leader, arriving after years spent arranging and shaping Ghanaian highlife from behind the scenes. Cut for the Essiebons label, it fuses Fante rhythms with electric funk, soul and jazz, a synthesis Taylor built through time studying in London and working alongside Fela Kuti and members of Osibisa. The horn arrangements run deep and layered, the grooves lean hard into Afrobeat territory, and Taylor moves easily between bandleader and storyteller across the record. Largely overlooked on first release, it slowly built a cult following among collectors and DJs; Strut's 2015 reissue restores and remasters the audio and adds new notes drawn from an interview with Taylor's son, Henry.
