A Tribute To Jack Johnson, released February 1971 on Columbia, was recorded at CBS's 30th Street Studio across two 1970 sessions, with Miles Davis backed by John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Michael Henderson and Billy Cobham, plus narration from actor Brock Peters. Made for a documentary about boxer Jack Johnson, the record leaned into the funk and rock rhythms of James Brown and Sly Stone. It reached number four on the jazz chart despite minimal label promotion.
