Tonic, released in 1999, captures Medeski Martin & Wood live at the Tonic venue in New York across shows in March 1999, performed for an audience of around 150 seated close around the trio. The record marks a return to the acoustic piano-bass-drums format of their debut, Notes from the Underground, after years of touring with electric instruments. The venue itself, where the band had played their first-ever live show the previous year, gives the record its particular intimacy.
