Sweet Beginnings, released 1977, was Marlena Shaw's first album for Columbia after four years at Blue Note, produced by Bert DeCoteaux at Total Experience Recording Studios in Hollywood. Motown bassist James Jamerson appears on the session alongside drummer James Gadson. A medley pairing "Yu-Ma" with the Goffin-King standard "Go Away Little Boy" became the album's biggest hit, reaching number twenty-one on the R&B singles chart.
