The Sound of Listening, released October 2022 on Edition Records, is drummer Mark Guiliana's third quartet album, a deliberate step back from the electronic-leaning BEAT MUSIC! project toward acoustic small-group writing with Shai Maestro, Jason Rigby and Chris Morrissey. The record takes its shape from Thich Nhat Hanh's book Silence and its idea of the inner quiet needed to truly observe the world, reflected in the ten miniatures' intentionally lowercase titles, from "a path to bliss" to "practicing silence." Guiliana, who has also played with David Bowie and Brad Mehldau, keeps the writing spare throughout, letting space do as much work as the notes.
