Manu Dibango recorded this material in 1972, the same year as his breakout “Soul Makossa,” blending Afro-soul, funk and jazz over Latin percussion and rock guitar. Thirteen tracks including “The Panther,” “African Battle” and “Wa-Wa” trace the Cameroonian saxophonist working through American funk and soul influences at the height of his creative momentum, filtered through his own West African rhythmic sensibility rather than simply imitating them.
