Universal Beings, Makaya McCraven's fifth album, is a double LP of twenty-two tracks recorded with different ensembles across four cities: Queens, with Brandee Younger and Joel Ross; Chicago, with Shabaka Hutchings and Junius Paul; London; and Los Angeles, at Jeff Parker's home studio with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Carlos Niño. McCraven builds the record with his signature method, recording live sessions and then collaging, editing and looping the results into finished compositions. The project argues, in his words, for "a higher level of connection between musicians than regionality or place," while still carrying the specific character of each city's scene through the music.
