In These Times, released September 2022 on International Anthem, was recorded across seven years and pulls together Makaya McCraven's regular collaborators, Jeff Parker, Junius Paul, Brandee Younger, Joel Ross and Marquis Hill, into fuller orchestral arrangements than his earlier, more collage-based records. It opens with looped harp, horns and percussion set against sampled voice from Studs Terkel's Chicago radio archive, McCraven's editing and layering technique folding hip-hop's sense of rhythm into a live jazz ensemble rather than a beat built after the fact. The title track runs in an unusual 21/8 time signature, one of several compositions built around his interest in irregular meter.
