The Nature of Imitation, released August 2018 on Brainfeeder, marks Dorian Concept's return after a few years away following 2014's Joined Ends. Born Oliver Thomas Johnson and discovered by Flying Lotus via MySpace, he deliberately set aside his usual prodigious production habits to find a new way in, leaning more than before on his own vocals, especially on the opening track. Made across 2016 and 2017 using old-fashioned live playing and hand-recording, the record chases deliberately artificial-sounding textures, pulling from '60s jazz through '90s electronica while circling ideas about error, shrinking attention spans and how differently everyone experiences the same moment. He's described the result himself as "lively, chaotic and loud."
