Lady Wray's 2022 sophomore album with producer Leon Michels moves further from her 2016 debut Queen Alone into a hip-hop-inflected sound, boom-bap drums and heavier bass sitting under her analog soul vocals. The record covers difficult relationships on the title track, her own youth in the music industry on “Where Were You,” racial tension on “Beauty In The Fire,” and her church background on “Thank You,” with Kenneth Wray Sr. and Melody Bloom Bacote both featured. Wray has said her goal is simply “to help and to heal people with singing,” and the record's range plays that intent out directly.
