Chapters marks a reset for Kneebody — a new lineup, a new label in Edition Records, and by the band’s own account a ‘renewed focus’ after a long run together. The instrumental quintet’s mix of deep grooves and knotty melody stays intact, but this record leans harder on outside voices than usual, with Becca Stevens, Gretchen Parlato, Michael Mayo and Josh Dion all featured across the ten tracks. For a band with as much history as Kneebody has, a collaboration-heavy record like this reads less like reinvention than confirmation of what they’ve always done well.
