Ism, produced and mixed by Makaya McCraven, pulls together sessions bassist Junius Paul recorded at Chicago's Comfort Station and Polish Triangle in 2016, plus live material captured at Co-Prosperity Sphere and The Hideout, released on International Anthem. The record is rooted in Paul's years at the Velvet Lounge starting in 2002, immersed among the city's AACM avant-garde musicians, and pulls influence from Chess Records, guitarist Pete Cosey and arranger Charles Stepney as much as from straight jazz lineage. Paul has described that scene simply: "It's like in Africa, if you weren't there, you weren't there," an atmosphere he's carried into his own writing.
