Let's Stay Together, released January 1972 on Hi Records, was recorded at Memphis's Royal Studios with producer Willie Mitchell, their third album together, backed by the Hi Rhythm Section of the Hodges brothers and drummer Al Jackson Jr. The title track became Al Green's only number-one pop hit and his signature song, and the album held the top spot on the Soul Albums chart for ten straight weeks, the first of six consecutive Green albums to do so.
