American Love Call, released March 2019 on Dead Oceans, is the second album from the trio Durand Jones and the Indications, formed when Jones, drummer Aaron Frazer and guitarist Blake Rhein met as students at Indiana University. Where their scrappy, low-budget debut leaned raw, this record adds strings and backing vocals, built around Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions as touchstones. Rhein has described their process as closer to hip-hop sampling than straight revivalism, pulling '70s soul and folk-rock apart and reassembling it new. Jones has said he never expected this path, but takes it as his calling.
