Jazz Is Dead, the ongoing project from producers Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, pairs contemporary production with veteran soul and jazz musicians for full new albums rather than remixes or samples — past volumes have teamed the pair with Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith and Brazilian icons including João Donato and Marcos Valle. This entry brings in Carlos Dafé, the Rio de Janeiro singer whose 1977 debut helped define Brazilian soul at a moment when, in his own words, almost nobody in Brazil's commercial scene was making Black music. Dafé had already played with Elza Soares and Tim Maia before that breakthrough; this session puts his voice in front of a newly built band decades on.
