Best known to wider audiences for his saxophone on David Bowie’s Blackstar, Donny McCaslin has spent his solo career since pulling jazz toward rock and electronic textures rather than settling into either lane. Lullaby For The Lost, his fourteenth album as a leader, leans further into a guitar-driven, rock-influenced sound across nine tracks — ‘Wasteland,’ ‘Solace’ and the title track among them. It’s less a jazz record with rock flourishes than a rock record that happens to be led by a saxophonist, McCaslin still restlessly pushing past whatever he did on the last one, nine dynamic and emotionally charged compositions that keep the momentum moving forward throughout.
