Nightcruising, released November 1981 on Mercury, was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis and produced by longtime collaborator Allen Jones. The record leaned into a brighter, synthesizer-driven sound than the Bar-Kays' earlier work, led by the single "Hit and Run." It reached number six on the R&B albums chart and was certified gold, one of several gold records in the group's catalog.
