Stay Free, released August 1979 on Warner Bros. and self-produced by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in New York. Lead single "Found a Cure" topped Billboard's Disco chart, and the album reached number twenty-three on the Billboard 200. Session players include Eric Gale, Steve Gadd and Ralph MacDonald, with the Philadelphia Inquirer noting the duo's frank songwriting about marriage and commitment throughout.
