Asha Puthli's 1973 debut was recorded in London with arranger Del Newman, fresh off sessions for Cat Stevens and Elton John, and released on CBS. Born in Mumbai, Puthli had already sung with Ornette Coleman before cutting this record, and its opener — a J.J. Cale cover reworked into a slow-burning, sample-ready groove — set the tone for a record that moves fluidly between jazz, soul and early disco. Visa problems stalled her momentum in the UK not long after release, but the album's afterlife has outlasted that setback: its grooves later turned up sampled by Jay-Z, 50 Cent and the Notorious B.I.G. Puthli herself once summed up her own contradictions: “spiritually 6,000 years old... and emotionally five.”
