Yazmin Lacey named her debut after the way she actually communicates with collaborators — quick voice memos, unfiltered and imperfect. ‘A voice note represents an immediate reaction to something,’ she’s said, and the fourteen tracks chase that same rawness deliberately, built from studio jam sessions with Craigie Dodds, JD.Reid and Melo-Zed under executive producer Dave Okumu, keeping in the pauses and cracks rather than smoothing them out. Following three earlier EPs, it moves through breakups, relocation and self-doubt without settling into one clear genre, Lacey happy to call her own sound impossible to pin down rather than reach for a tidier label. Questlove is among the record’s more surprising champions.
