Brown Sugar, released July 1995 on EMI, is D'Angelo's debut album, recorded across 1994 and 1995 in New York and Sacramento, with D'Angelo himself playing most of the instruments. The record blends classic soul balladry with a hip-hop-inflected sensibility and his gospel-trained falsetto, and eventually went platinum. His manager Kedar Massenburg coined the term "neo-soul" to market it alongside early work from Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, giving the movement its name.
