Voodoo, released January 2000 on Virgin, was recorded over several years at Electric Lady Studios with engineer Russell Elevado, built from mostly live, minimal-overdub takes on vintage analog gear. D'Angelo worked within the loose Soulquarians circle alongside Questlove, Pino Palladino and Erykah Badu. The record followed years of writer's block after his 1995 debut. It debuted at number one and won the Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2001.
