Theon Cross built his name turning the tuba into a lead instrument rather than a novelty, and Intra-I pushes that further — his first record to feature vocalists, drawing on Afro-Caribbean heritage across jazz, dub, hip-hop, soca and grime. Guests include Remi Graves, Shumba Maasai and Afronaut Zu, plus fellow tuba player Oren Marshall. Coming after his 2019 debut Fyah, this is Cross treating breath and low frequency as compositional tools rather than just rhythm-section support — an expansion of what the instrument’s supposed to be capable of, described by Cross himself as ‘an uplifting celebration of Black music.’
