TP, released July 1980 on Philadelphia International, gathered an unusually wide production team for a Pendergrass record, Ashford & Simpson, Dexter Wansel, Cecil Womack and the McFadden & Whitehead songwriting duo among them, with session players Eric Gale, Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis filling out the arrangements. It reached number three on the R&B albums chart, driven by "Love T.K.O.," which climbed to number two on the R&B singles chart, and "Can't We Try," a duet with Stephanie Mills.
