360 Degrees Of Billy Paul, released 1972 on Philadelphia International, was produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, steering Paul's jazz-club voice toward a funkier, more commercial soul sound. It topped the Billboard Soul Albums chart on the strength of "Me and Mrs. Jones," which went platinum and won Paul a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, the label's first number-one hit. He later recalled facing Ray Charles and Curtis Mayfield in that same Grammy field.
