Wisdom Of Elders, released September 2016 on Brownswood Recordings, documents sessions Shabaka Hutchings recorded in Johannesburg in 2015, one of several trips he made to immerse himself in South African musical culture. Working with an eight-piece band built around horns, vocals and a full rhythm section, Hutchings set out to bring the musical language of his UK groups into direct contact with South African musicians and sensibilities. The label frames the nine tracks as a psalm in nine parts, an episodic journey unfurling across the Atlantic, moving through grief and renewal in the decades since apartheid's end.
