Dirty Mind, released October 1980, was recorded by Prince alone in a makeshift basement studio at his Lake Minnetonka home, engineering the sessions himself under the alias Jamie Starr. The raw production suited the material: sexually explicit lyrics and a blend of funk, new wave and punk-inflected rock, a sharp turn from his earlier records. It peaked at just 45 on the Billboard 200 but is now seen as setting his direction for the decade ahead.
