Special Edition, the second Five Special album for Elektra, pulls together musicians from both Detroit and Philadelphia soul circles across its seven tracks, among them Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell and saxophonist Eli Fontaine, best known for the sax intro on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." Guitarist T.J. Tindall, a regular in Philadelphia International's session pool, and bassist Tony Green round out a writing team spanning both cities. Reissues later revived interest in the record.
