Like A Ship (Without A Sail), recorded in 1971, pairs a 27-year-old Chicago pastor with the choir from his church's after-school program, backed by Chess/Cadet studio veterans Gene Barge, Phil Upchurch and Richard Evans. The eight songs blend euphoric gospel with Curtis Mayfield-style political soul, sleigh bells and hand claps sitting alongside jazzy piano runs. Made in the uneasy years after the Civil Rights Movement's early victories, the record channels that moment's mix of hope and exhaustion into something that crossed well beyond church audiences, and has since been sampled by T.I., Kanye West and Khalid.
